The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Romance
In this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to collecting teeth from slumbering children and placing gold under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He’s only a bit more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly creature he expected.
An Unlikely Bond and Common Enemy
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people together. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be self-centered types, prone to taking anything they want, while goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact bright and technologically advanced.
Naturally, such a setup requires a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Final Thoughts
You won’t find very many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not old enough for whatever teenagers view these days instead of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
