The UK Foreign Office has included 11 further nations to its travel warning list about the risks of methanol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Only recently, authorities had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following several high-profile events like the fatal death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being cautions that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in blindness or death within 12 to 48 hours.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance commonly used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not intended for human consumption.

While it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.

However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists

Government representative a senior official stated that all travellers should be aware of the indicators of methanol contamination.

"When you are drinking spirits abroad, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the official said.

"In case something seems unusual, for example a fatigue that's much more severe than normal or vision problems – get medical help immediately."

The complete register of destinations listed as posing a risk of methanol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
